Africa has many digital magnetic anomalies

The first global map of magnetic peculiarities - or anomalies - on earth has been assembled by an international team of researchers. The map shows the variation in strength of the magnetic field over the earths surface. The redder (hotter) the colours the higher the magnetic strength while the bluer (cooler) the colours the lower the values. It would seem that Africa has the greatest concentration of these magetic anomalies with central west and north west Africa being the most affected.

Bunmi Akpata-OhoheOver 221 senior representatives of world mapping organisations from 70 countries have resolved to encourage the importance of MAPS and geographic information in Africa, following the 2007 Cambridge Conference of national mapping organisations. The conference, hosted by Britain's Ordinance Survey, was a unique occasion, which gave top experts a chance to discuss mapping and land management issues of global importance. Implementing of the Millennium Goals in Africa project and ensuring the success of the African Geodetic Reference Frame (AFREF) are just two of a series of resolutions agreed by delegates at the end of the conference. Other resolutions covered the importance of good data collection and management; the development of national mapping organisations' reputation; use of technology; knowledge sharing through web portals; and engagement with decision makers.

Sallie White, the Cambridge conference manager, said "Ordnance Survey has been delighted to stage this event once again, giving the world's leaders in our industry the opportunity to share ideas and learn."

MDG Mapper: Visualizing Progress towards the MDGs in Africa

The MDG mapper is a tool developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa for dynamic mapping of comparative progress by African countries towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Using data provided by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), it enables speedy acquisition of up-to-date information on which countries have made the most progress and which are making the least progress at current rates of progress? For countries making the least progress, the Mapper enables the calculation of the extent to which they are off target.Very easy to use, - all you have to do to is to choose a goal, target and indicator and click and the Mapper will generate maps, charts and statistics dynamically for you. The Mapper is the best ally of the analyst, researcher, policy maker, policy and social activist interested in monitoring Africa's progress towards the MDGs. For countries where sub-national data are available, the Mapper is able to analyse MDG progress at the sub-national, provincial or district level. The maps, charts, and statistics are of high quality and can be directly imported into reports and presentations. Poster-size maps can be downloaded for advocacy. Do not forget to give due attribution to ECA should you use the maps or the charts in your presentation, report, or paper.
